Letter to Parents
August 26, 2011
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Welcome to a new semester in XXX High School. My name is Yanying Yang, and I am delighted to have your child in my Chemistry class. I would like to use this opportunity to introduce myself and to explain my expectations for your child this year. I attended Wilkes Central High School, and went on with my education to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where I received my Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry and my North Carolina Education Certification. I was in the Peer Tutoring program in college where I tutored college students in subject areas such as Chemistry, Physics, and Chinese. I also have great experience with children. I have been active in tutoring programs for elementary and high school students since high school. In fact, I have two younger siblings that I tutored and prepared for the years ahead of them.
Chemistry is a study of matter and energy. It is everywhere around you – cleaning products, plastic bags, bottles, and even a comfortable seat cushion are all the examples of Chemistry. This class may be intensive and challenging, but I aim to make it easy for the students to understand and fun for them to learn. The topics that we will cover range from understanding atoms to learning how molecules react with each other. Students will perform multiple inquiry-based laboratory activities to help them understand the materials. Discussion of the contemporary scientific issues will be part of our curriculum to engage the students in the outside world and to improve their critical thinking skills.
In order to help all of my students to succeed in my class, I am asking my students to finish homework assignments on time, and I encourage them to ask questions in class and outside of class. I will be available before school, during lunch and after school. I also recommend the students to read their textbook before our lesson. This will help them to be better prepared when they come to class.
Students are most academically successful when parents are involved in their education. I would like to ask that you positively support your child in attendance and participation. Please encourage your child to be active and responsible in keeping up with his or her work. In the event of absence, your child is responsible for making up missed assignments.
Feel free to contact me with any concerns. You are also welcome to set up a meeting with me if you would like to talk to me about your child's performance in my class. I will be contacting you myself on a weekly basis to give you progress of your child and our curriculum.
Sincerely,
Yanying Yang
